Wilhelm Buchberger was received on his first day of work by the board members Georg Huber, Dr. Oliver Rong and Rainer Köhler as well as Georg Heinzelmann (Head of Project Management) and the HR department. Mr Buchberger officially joined the company on 1 January 2022 and will strengthen the project management team in the future. From a copper smithy to a leading global company: HUBER is growing steadily The growth in the number of employees over the past ten years alone is proof of the imposing development the company has taken: at the end of 2011, HUBER employed 603 people, but by 2014 the number had already risen to 694. In 2018, the 700 mark was reached with 703 employees at the end of the year (reporting date at the end of December). Wilhelm Buchberger is now HUBER's 800th employee – and the company's development suggests that the number of employees will continue to rise. [...]Clean water for the Sinai Peninsula: The water treatment plant in Bahr El-Baqar (Egypt) has recently been awarded by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest plant of its kind. Every year, more than two billion cubic metres of water are to be treated here on an area of about 650,000 square metres. The Berching-based company HUBER is supplying, among other equipment, 128 SOLSTICE® sludge turners for the large-scale project, from which about half a million people will benefit in the future. HUBER delivers 128 HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® units Capacity: over 2,000,000,000 m³ of water per year (over 64 m³ per second) Total area: 650,000 m² Chief Technology Officer Dr. Johann Grienberger: “Innovative technology to correct ecological imbalance in the future.” The Bahr El-Baqar drainage canal runs from the Egyptian capital Cairo along the Suez Canal through Lake Manzala into the Mediterranean Sea. Partially untreated municipal and industrial wastewater as well as polluted surface water from agriculture have so far led to an ecological imbalance. Total order volume of 700 million US Dollars: joint venture brought HUBER on board To solve this problem, the joint venture Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors was awarded the contract in 2018 to build a water treatment plant for more than 700 million US dollars. For this, the joint venture brought HUBER SE on board, among others: the Berching-based company is supplying its innovative technology for sewage sludge drying with solar energy for the world’s largest sewage sludge drying project. The water treatment plant has an annual water capacity of over two billion cubic metres, which corresponds to about 5.6 million cubic metres per day and over 64 cubic metres per second. The Bahr El-Baqar plant covers a total area of 650,000 square metres, and the area of the solar sewage sludge drying plant is 160,000 square metres. “Pollution of the Bahr El-Baqar drain has so far led to a severe ecological imbalance in the region. With our innovative technology, we are helping to treat very large volumes of water. The fact that the local people will benefit from this major project makes us proud,” says Dr Johann Grienberger, Chief Technology Officer of HUBER SE. HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE ® units dry sewage sludge for reuse The purification process produces very large quantities of sludge during water treatment. To reduce the amount of sludge to be disposed of, it is mechanically dewatered and dried by the fully automatic sludge turners using solar energy. The 128 HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE ® units dry the sludge produced during water treatment to a quarter in mass and volume and turn it into granules. The end product is used in agriculture, for example as soil fertiliser and cultivating agent. “Drying sewage sludge with solar energy is a sustainable and environmentally friendly process: the dewatered sludge is distributed in a greenhouse structure and dried homogeneously by the radiation of the sun into a stable and odourless granulate,” says Dr Grienberger. “The process ensures the best mixing and aeration of the entire sludge bed – with minimised odour and dust development, optimised evaporation performance and low power consumption.” 490,000 tons of dewatered sewage sludge per year: fully automated drying process using solar energy The central element of the HUBER process for sewage sludge drying with solar energy is the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE ® : the machine takes care of spreading, granulating, aerating, turning and mixing of the sludge. Overall, the proportion of dry residue from 490,000 tons of dewatered sewage sludge annually will be increased from 24 to 75 percent. Thus, only about 160,000 tons of stable dry granulate need to be disposed of per year. In 16 greenhouses, a total of 128 HUBER sewage sludge turners will operate on eight lines each in the future. In addition to the 128 sludge turners, HUBER supplies the fully automatic sludge feed and discharge system by means of moving floor systems and 64 HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 T units. These have a total length of three kilometers, which corresponds to the length of about 30 soccer fields. In addition, the Berching-based company supplies the control system for the entire solar drying plant and the complete detailed process engineering. From concept layout to complete package with detailed plant layout: the engineering process In the engineering process, HUBER’s project management team gradually turned the concept layout into a complete package with a detailed plant layout and technical documentation that met the customer’s high requirements. “In order to master the challenges of a project of this dimension, a high degree of detailed project planning was necessary at a very early stage – across departmental and company boundaries,” says Georg Heinzelmann, Head of Project Management at HUBER SE. “For everyone involved, there were numerous hours of technical coordination to be done internally and externally, as well as consistent coordination between sales, project management, technical departments, the customer and suppliers.” Tight time frame: successful project implementation within one year Another challenge in the implementation of the project was the narrow time window. There were only twelve months between the technical approval and the delivery of the last machines to Bahr El-Baqar. Within this tight time frame, the project team not only ensured that the 128 HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE ® and 64 HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 T units were ready for dispatch. The entire purchasing scope was also coordinated, suppliers were kept on schedule and weekly deliveries were made over a period of nine months. 40,000 hours of production time, 39 partial deliveries and 270 containers: the deliveries in numbers On 26 November 2020, the last machines were delivered within the given time from the production site at HUBER’s headquarters in Berching. The following figures provide a good insight into the dimension of this project: a total of about 40,000 hours of production time were required, so that at peak times six sludge turners or four screw conveyors of approx. 50 metres each were delivered per week. A total of 39 partial deliveries including direct deliveries from suppliers were organised and 270 containers were shipped to the construction site on the northern Mediterranean coast of Egypt. Despite the Corona pandemic: project on the home straight The Corona pandemic has severely limited the possibility to get a regular and comprehensive overview of the construction site. Despite these adverse circumstances, those involved in the project have accomplished to manage this major project and enter the home stretch. The award of the official Guinness World Record a few months ago is both a cause for joy and additional motivation to bring the Bahr El-Baqar project to an equally successful conclusion. [...]Scientists, planners and plant operators met to discuss the challenges of sewage sludge disposal on 23 July 2019 at an expert forum organised by HUBER SE. More than 300 guests had come to inform themselves and listen to the excellent presentations of the experts that both provided an overview of the legal framework and showed practical solutions. In order to be able to maintain sewage sludge disposal safely in the future, regional and future-oriented strategies and solutions are required. The sewage sludge forum with speakers from companies, research, associations and ministries provided information on legal requirements and political developments and, above all, presented innovative and practice-oriented concepts. The well-attended Europahalle at Berching - more than 300 guests had come to inform themselves and listen to excellent presentations of the experts The Bavarian Minister for the Environment Glauber as patron of the event in his welcome video message The innovative approaches of the presentations and the concepts for secured sewage sludge disposal were met with lively interest from the audience The breaks offered sufficient space for technical discussions and networking CEO Georg Huber opened the event that took place in the Europahalle at Berching, reminding the audience in his welcome speech that the first HUBER Sewage Sludge Day was organised 15 years ago. The moderator of the event, Professor Norbert Dichtl, director of the Institute for Sanitary Engineering of the Technical University of Braunschweig, explained in his introductory speech the legal regulations setting the framework for sewage sludge disposal. Especially the new German Fertilizer Regulation and Waste Sewage Sludge Ordinance are playing a prominent role in this context. This results in the necessity to provide increased capacity for sewage sludge mono-incineration plants and in an increased demand for economical methods of phosphorus recovery. Markus Gleis of the German Federal Environmental Agency reported then about the present situation of sewage sludge disposal in Germany. Approximately 1.8 million tons dry mass are generated annually in Germany. In 2016, approximately 65% of it were used for agricultural purposes, 24% for thermal utilisation and 11% went to landscaping projects. He also stated the German Federal Environmental Agency’s position when it comes to the future of sewage sludge: abandon agricultural sewage sludge utilisation and recover phosphorus and energy from sewage sludge. Professor Mocker of the University of Applied Sciences Amberg-Weiden dealt with the topic of thermal sewage sludge utilisation. He demonstrated the advantages and disadvantages of decentralized and centralized solutions for sewage sludge drying and further thermal sewage sludge utilisation. He explained in detail the different technical solutions available presently but finally concluded that the proven technology of mono-incineration in a fluidised bed furnace is the technology of choice. Experts spoke about their practical experience and projects they have implemented. Ulrich Jacobs pointed out the importance of intercommunal cooperation and showed with the example of a sewage sludge cooperation in the northeastern German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern what to consider when uniting 15 wastewater authorities into one cooperation and what are the challenges to overcome in this process. Harald Erber of STW Innsbruck reported about the successful installation of a HUBER Belt Dryer BT on the sewage treatment plant Innsbruck. Mr. Ziegler of STW Bayreuth told about his practical experience with the HUBER solar sewage sludge dryer and provided also interesting insights into the decision process that led to choosing a solar dryer. Professor Günthert introduced to the audience the Platform for coordination of municipal sewage sludge utilisation in Bavaria (PKB) . The task of this organisation, among other, is to support Bavarian municipalities in establishing partnerships (with economy or as intercommunal cooperations) and promote the exchange of expertise with researchers and suppliers of options for sewage sludge utilisation. Jan Kirchoff of Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH picked up the topic of phosphorus recycling, which is closely connected with the issue of sewage sludge disposal. He presented the PHOS4green method that manages to convert sewage sludge ash to phosphorus fertilizer. A large-scale plant with a processing capacity of 60,000 t sewage sludge ash per year is currently under construction. Insight into the activities of a sewage sludge disposal company was given by Johann Emter of Emter GmbH. On their thermal sewage sludge utilisation plant, they process 140,000 t sewage sludge per year. The sewage sludge ash generated on site is utilised as fertilizer. Due to the great demand, they are planning to increase the incineration capacity of the plant with the installation of a HUBER Belt Dryer BT 24. As representative of WTEB, Thomas Roitzsch reported about the project Halle-Lochau, a thermal sewage sludge utilisation plant with slude2energy GmbH as contractor. sludge2energy is a joint enterprise between the companies WTE Essen and HUBER SE. The plant at Halle-Lochau is designed for a capacity of approximately 33,000 t/a dewatered sewage sludge and 2,750 t/a dried sewage sludge. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled to take place in September 2020. WTEB as a subsidiary of WTE Essen will take over the operation of the plant. The successful event was closed with a summary provided by Professor Dichtl who once again reflected on the many aspects of sewage sludge disposal. The employees Richard Bayerschmidt, Wolf-Dietrich Gräper, Roland Kuttig and Erwin Meyer had been with the company for altogether more than 168 years. The executive board, human resources department and works council gave the former employees a fitting farewell and transition into retirement during the official farewell ceremony at the HUBER Forum. A total of 168 years of professional experience at HUBER: the Berching-based company officially bid farewell to four long-serving and valued employees in retirement. The farewell ceremony took place in compliance with all applicable Corona rules in the HUBER Forum at the company headquarters in Berching. After a meal together, Dr. Oliver Rong (Vice CEO) thanked the employees for their decades of loyalty to the company. What it means to remain loyal to a single company for a (professional) lifetime is shown by the career of Richard Bayerschmidt. He started as an apprentice at HUBER on 3 September 1973 and, following his successful final examination, was employed in the machining department before operating various milling machines from the 1990s until his retirement. Bayerschmidt remained loyal to HUBER until his retirement on 31 August 2021. Wolf-Dietrich Gräper: field service, North Rhine-Westphalia region, from 1992 to 2021. Wolf-Dietrich Gräper spent 29 years at HUBER: starting in May 1992, he concentrated as a field sales representative in the North Rhine-Westphalia region on the sale of HUBER products from the Safe Access Solutions (SAS) range. Gräper developed considerable market potential in this area. Until his retirement, which will officially take place on 31 December 2021, he distributed HUBER’s entire product range in the same area. Roland Kuttig: welder, from 1978 to 2021. When Roland Kuttig started at HUBER in 1978, the company had not yet specialised in stainless steel alone. So it happened that in his early days as a welder he processed excavator parts and presses made of steel weighing up to 40 tonnes. After the company switched to manufacturing stainless steel products, Roland Kuttig was employed in the body shop of machine manufacture, where he has strengthened the team of the HUBER Wash Press WAP® body manufacture in recent years. Erwin Meyer: surface finishing, facility manager, etc., from 1973 to 2021. As an “all-round talent” at HUBER, Erwin Meyer has become known throughout the company: in 48 years of service, Meyer passed through various areas of responsibility after joining the company in September 1973 until his official retirement. He was responsible for surface finishing and pickling of stainless steel products, was deployed as a safety specialist and was a water protection, waste and crane officer. In the final stage of his time at HUBER, he was responsible for lift maintenance and all facility management tasks. Meyer’s final retirement date was 31 May 2021.[...]
[...]Another milestone in the Hannover-Lahe project of sludge2energy GmbH The two HUBER Disc Dryer RotaDry® units 2050 M were successfully lifted into place in calendar week 44. A crane unloaded the two disc dryers from the heavy load transporters on site and lifted them directly into the building onto the prepared level. The disc dryers, each weighing around 63 tonnes, are used in the Hannover-Lahe sewage sludge mono-incineration plant (KVA) as pre-dryers for fuel preparation. Thermal drying for further utilisation of the sewage sludge: environmentally friendly heat for around 5,000 households Thermal drying ensures that the dewatered sewage sludge is dried to such an extent that it can be utilised autothermally (i.e. without external heat or energy input) in the fluidized bed incinerator. The steam generated in the boiler is used both to produce electricity to cover the plant's own electrical needs and to heat the dryers. The vapours produced (steam) are condensed in a vapour condenser, the resulting heat is used to feed the district heating network. The environmentally friendly heat is then available to around 5,000 households. HUBER, in cooperation with its subsidiary and the general contractor of the overall project, sludge2energy GmbH, is thus building a modern and efficient plant for sewage sludge recycling that meets the highest standards. Another heavy load lifting manoeuvre: fluidized bed furnace S2E-Fluidizer, followed by insertion of the steam turbine Lifting in of another heavy load component followed directly in calendar week 46: The S2E-Fluidizer, the fluidized bed furnace developed by S2E and the heart of the combustion concept, was already completed on site and lifted into place at the plant.
