In the summer or in a hot environment, the sludge can easily be dried completely, i. e. to 90% dry residue, which means that only 10% water remains. In autumn or spring, partial drying can be achieved (to between 50 and 75% dry residue), while in winter, with longer periods of sub-zero temperatures, plants are sometimes shut down.
HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® The innovative, season-independent solar sludge dryer

Plant designs and equipment
- Loading and unloading of dewatered sewage sludge automatically or with a wheel loader
- Loading and unloading on the same or opposite gable ends
- Sophisticated safety features
- Optimal climate control with sensors and fans
Control of the drying plant
Clean, safe and fully automated. The plant operates fully automatically, ensuring maximum efficiency with minimal staff involvement.
- Coordinated, continuously operating machinery
- Self-sufficient, fully automated process
The system control provides convenient access to all key information and intelligent control technology, including:
- Visual representation of the sludge bed height, temperature, moisture content and required motor torque, displayed as a graph across the length of the hall
- Operation via the on-site HMI panel or via a mirroring function to on-site devices, such as the operator’s mobile phone or tablet
- Configuration, saving and loading of parameter sets (recipes) for changing requirements

Ground-level system: The HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® FloorRunner

The HUBER SRT solar and regenerative drying system has been operating successfully for decades. In recent years, HUBER SE has become the global market leader in solar sewage sludge drying, offering a wide range of drying lines and sludge turners.
The HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® FloorRunner offers the advantage of simple structural installation of the solar drying plant. This is because the interface between the machine and the structure is a flat concrete surface. The running surface of the wheels and the sludge bed are at the same level, so an additional wall for the wheels to run on is not necessary. Standardised steel angles are used to provide guidance and to edge the sludge bed.
Constructing a plant with the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® FloorRunner is therefore cost-effective, simple and quick. Precise installation of the sludge turning machine significantly reduces maintenance requirements and wear during operation.
In addition to the FloorRunner, which runs directly on the floor, HUBER also offers a variant in which the machine runs along concrete walls. HUBER supports customers with specifications, examples and testing options for the appropriate construction of the walls.
Advantages of the HUBER Sludge Turner
This well-proven machine is made entirely of stainless steel and consists of a rotating double shovel mounted on a moving bridge structure.
Thanks to its unique design, the construction offers many advantages:
- Transporting, granulating, turning, accumulating or discharging sludge in a single operation
- Homogeneous and rapid drying thanks to high mixing and aeration performance
- Options available: A granulation blade is available for processing particularly sticky sludge, and the machine can be enclosed to prevent dust dispersion.
Advantages of the unique operating principle with a rotating double shovel:
- Rapid drying and easy mechanical processing: Mixing dry sludge back into wet sludge creates an open-pored, rapidly granulating sludge that is easy to handle and releases water quickly. The lower water content resulting from backmixing leads to reduced biological activity.
- Achieving the desired degree of dryness: Through parameterisation, different areas of the drying hall can be processed separately.
- Dust and abrasion reduction: Wet sludge can be deposited in dry areas of the sludge bed to remoisten any over-dried areas if necessary. Dry sludge can be transported to the discharge point without further mechanical stress.
- Options for plant design: Sludge feeding and discharge can be selected on opposite sides or on the same side of the drying bed, as required
