HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® Ro2 / RPPS / STAR A reliable and proven inlet screen for wastewater and process water screening.

Design and Function

The HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® operates using a unique system that integrates screening, washing, transport, compaction, and dewatering into a single unit.
The throughput of the HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® can be customized to meet specific site requirements, depending on the screen bar spacing (0.5 to 6 mm), perforation size (1 to 6 mm), and screen size (with a basket diameter of up to 9.8 feet / 3,000 mm). The unit is fully constructed from stainless steel and undergoes acid treatment in a pickling bath for enhanced durability and resistance.
HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® units can be installed directly into channels or provided as tank-mounted units with a 35° inclination. Wastewater flows into the open end of the inclined screen basket and passes through the screen, where floating and suspended materials are retained. As the screen surface becomes clogged, an additional filtering effect is created, allowing solids smaller than the bar spacing or perforation to be captured.
When the upstream water level reaches a certain point due to screen blinding, the basket begins to rotate. The rotating screen drum lifts the screenings and deposits them into a centrally located trough. A scraper brush and spray nozzle bar assist in removing the screenings from the drum. A screw conveyor within the trough rotates in sync with the drum, transporting the screenings through a closed, inclined pipe. The screw conveyor dewaters, compacts, and conveys the screenings, minimizing odor issues, and discharges them into a customer’s container or a downstream conveying system.
Additional Model Variants and Options
HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® PRO
The unique design of the HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® PRO series isolates the water level in the trough from the upstream and downstream water levels. This is accomplished through a closed system beneath the perforated plate of the trough. A suction pump removes the liquid phase from this closed system, pumping it back to the area upstream of the machine. The solids are then washed, compacted, and discharged by a conveying screw.
This operating method allows for continuous screen operation with a stable water level upstream of the machine, which in turn significantly increases throughput capacity.
The PRO system can be reliably used even with high downstream water levels and is particularly well-suited for pump applications. Since water backup into the trough is prevented, the discharge of screenings via the removal screw is consistently ensured. Additionally, the PRO system can be easily retrofitted to any type of HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT®, offering enhanced flexibility and performance.
HUBER Perforated Plate Screen ROTAMAT® STAR
The HUBER Perforated Plate Screen ROTAMAT® STAR is specifically designed for fine filtration and large wastewater volumes in gravity lines with low headloss. Its design follows the proven ROTAMAT® principle, integrating screenings separation, washing, transport, and compaction in a single unit. To enhance screen throughput capacity, the RPPS STAR features a star-shaped screen basket with a zigzag-folded surface. This innovative design increases the effective screen surface area, resulting in approximately 30% higher throughput capacity while maintaining the same nominal diameter.
The STAR design combines the advantages of maximum free screen surface with exceptional separation efficiency, enabling optimal and cost-effective system sizing. This space-saving solution also reduces civil engineering costs. The ROTAMAT® STAR is suitable for installation in both existing channels and tanks.
HUBER Perforated Plate Screen ROTAMAT® STAR units are typically used with perforations of 1, 1.5, or 2 mm and are ideal for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants. These screens are also highly effective in protecting downstream membrane systems by removing hair and fibers. They can be installed in the mechanical treatment stage or downstream of grit traps. For applications requiring even higher throughput capacity, special PRO design screens are available to further enhance performance.
Integrated Screenings Washing System IRGA
To optimize the treatment process, an integrated screenings washing system (IRGA) can be provided and easily retrofitted. This system improves the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of the pretreated wastewater. Additionally, the IRGA reduces screenings disposal costs, ensuring an optimal cost/performance ratio.
The HUBER ROTAMAT® principle enables the integration of the screenings washing system directly into the trough and lower end of the rising pipe. By separating soluble matter from the inert material, the system effectively washes out organics, resulting in a significant weight reduction of approximately 50%. This not only reduces the volume of screenings but also improves operating conditions and enhances hygiene.
The dewatering performance, which typically reaches up to 40% dry solids (DS), can be increased to over 45% DS by adding a high-pressure unit (HP) to the integrated screenings washing system (IRGA). This combination ensures maximum dewatering efficiency, while also reducing both disposal and operating costs.
Benefits of the HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® Ro2 / RPPS / STAR
- Low headloss – High separation efficiency:
Due to the drum's shape and its 35° installation angle, the screen area is significantly larger than that of a vertical or steeply inclined screen. This design results in low headloss, high separation efficiency, and maximum throughput.
- No by-passing:
The entire flow enters the screen drum through its open front end and can only exit through the screen area. This design prevents plant overflow and ensures that all screenings are reliably retained within the drum.
- Multiplefunctions combined in one system:
The ROTAMAT® Screens combine the functions of screenings removal, transport, washing, dewatering, and compaction into a single, space-saving unit. An optional bagging unit ensures that the entire system operates without odor nuisance.
- Outdoor installation:
For frost-proof outdoor installation, the HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® can be equipped with a heating wire and thermal insulation, ensuring reliable operation in colder climates.
- Completely made of stainless steel:
The machine is fully constructed from stainless steel and is pickled in an acid bath, effectively preventing corrosion and significantly reducing maintenance requirements.
- Retrofitting:
The design of the ROTAMAT® Screens allows for easy modification to adapt to changing requirements. Features such as heating and/or the integrated screenings washing system can be retrofitted, and the bar spacing can be adjusted to meet more stringent separation criteria.
- Low maintenance:
No lubrication is required. Regular checks and visual inspections are all that is needed for maintenance.
