Road wastewater treatment plants are used for heavily frequented roads. The task of such a plant is to filter rainwater that runs off roads before it is discharged into a body of water or into the ground.

Road run-off is stormwater containing coarser solids such as gravel, sand and litter, as well as significant amounts of finer solids such as abrasion from car tyres (microplastics).

Road wastewater occurs whenever it rains, and its quantity depends on the amount of rainfall.

Intermediate storage and filter system

A road run-off treatment plant is characterised by two main features: a basin for intermediate storage and a filter system. Since such a plant cannot be designed to cope with very rarely occurring but extremely high rainfall volumes, an overflow is also provided for relief in the event of excessive amounts of water.

The treatment plants for road run-off can be distinguished into natural plants and technical systems. The filter system of a natural treatment plant consists of a soil filter.

The technical road run-off treatment plant as a space-saving solution

The technical system uses space-saving machine technology for filtration instead of a soil filter. HUBER uses the HUBER Disc Filter RoDisc® for its technical system. The filter discs, which are covered with a filter fabric, retain the finest solid particles in a continuous filtration process and thus reduce the contaminants contained in the road wastewater, such as microplastics, heavy metals and organic pollutants.

As both tar and tyre debris have a clear tendency to irreversibly adhere to the filter fabric, thorough cleaning of the filter discs is necessary, which is why the HUBER Disc Filter RoDisc^® is equipped with an automatic system for intensive cleaning.

The road run-off treatment plant consists of several treatment stages. The rainwater flowing off the street is collected via a network of pipes and then flows, as far as possible by gravity, to the treatment plant.

In an upstream coarse material separator, sedimentation substances such as grit and gravel settle, while floating matter collects on the water surface. The wastewater then flows into a basin, which serves both for intermediate storage and pre-treatment (sedimentation of smaller solids).

In the final treatment stage of a technical road run-off treatment system, the pretreated wastewater is passed on to the HUBER Disc Filter RoDisc® before it is discharged for infiltration or to a body of water.
