Reduce Operating Costs for Wastewater Treatment

Optimisation of existing treatment concepts through adapted machine technology

Industries that produce wastewater with above-average pollution levels must either pre-treat it before discharge into the sewer or treat it completely biologically before it can be returned to water bodies. The relevant regulations result from the Water Resources Act, or from local statutes and environmental legislation.

Since these industries can usually provide wastewater treatment with comparatively few resources, necessary optimisations are often not undertaken, and this is reflected in particular in increased operating and maintenance costs.

Process Technology

HUBER solutions for reduction of operating costs

Regular evaluation of the plants often reveals a wide range of optimisation and cost-saving potentials:

In principle, the more solids and organic matter that can be removed by mechanical and physico-chemical processes, the lower the operating costs of wastewater treatment. In contrast, aerobic treatment is significantly more expensive because of the energy costs. In case of high amounts of dissolved organic matter, anaerobic treatment may also be useful.

HUBER has suitable machine technology and long experience in industrial wastewater treatment. Thus, previously undiscovered potential for improvement can be uncovered. Prior laboratory and pilot tests are used to determine the potential very precisely in advance.

In principle, the entire HUBER product portfolio is used, but especially the HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF, the HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS®, as well as the HUBER Disc Filter RoDisc® and the HUBER Pile Cloth Media Filter RotaFilt®.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

With suitable wastewater heat exchangers (e.g. HUBER Heat Exchanger RoWin) the heat potential can be used for heating or cooling. Due to the contaminants and organic matter present, self-cleaning of the heat exchanger is elementary for reliable operation. In combination with heat pumps, the temperature level can be increased or reduced.

In many cases, industrial wastewater treatment plants are hardly optimised after construction because they are usually only operated "on the side". There is great potential in better suspended matter separation (screening), the installation of chemical-physical treatment or the downstream connection of a tertiary or fourth treatment stage. Basically, each application must be analysed under consideration of the official requirements and individual solutions must be found.

Many flotation plants are controlled solely by throughput. However, since the necessary effluent quality is controlled by the pollutant parameters (especially COD) and the COD concentration changes throughout the day, the dosage of chemicals (such as acids, alkalis, flocculants, flocculation aids) must always be set to the highest possible values.

As a consequence, most of the time this means overdosing and wasting chemicals and an unnecessarily high sludge production due to hydroxide formation. The HUBER DigitDose chemicals dosing system continuously measures the influent quality, precisely doses chemicals and thus enables targeted control of effluent quality with lowest possible operating costs.

Basically: The better the wastewater is pre-cleaned before biological treatment, the less large the subsequent stages (e.g. biological treatment) have to be constructed and the less energy they require. In addition, wastewater treatment should be optimally adapted to the wastewater quality and designed for the target quality. Significantly better effluent values than the required quality mean higher costs in operation.

For existing plants, a comprehensive consideration of all stages should be carried out. An optimisation of the (mechanical and/or chemical-physical) pre-treatment stage often brings a saving and/or even an increase in capacity.
